Having come of age in the Midwest in the 80’s and 90’s Erin Overmeyer witnessed little of industrial age's power and prominence but instead the dark unfortunate fallout of the automobile industry’s collapse. As Americans continue to push further away from our urban cores we are seeing the decay and destruction of our city centers, and in turn, we are losing artistic and architectural landmarks. Overmeyer focuses on these landmarks that dot our American city centers, often ignored and forgotten.
The damage and disrepair that we see in our city centers intersects with Erin Overmeyer's personal experience of injury and its impact on her creative process. Three hand and wrist surgeries since 2003 have left her unable to paint or draw in the way she had prior to her hand injury. She has had to adapt by changing her style, medium, and mode of working. The work she creates now is acrylic, charcoal and collage and is characterized by a fractured surface, bold dark areas of charcoal, and a sense of urgency to create paintings before her hand deteriorates further. These damaged, fractured surfaces and sense of urgency in her work as a result of her injury are reflected in the urban centers around her, and illustrate the connection between Overmeyer's subject matter and personal experiences.
